Welcome to Arun A Cappella We are so pleased that you have come along to our website and are thinking of joining Arun A Cappella. Singing of any kind is great for our health and well-being and the challenge of singing in harmony makes it even more satisfying.
The chorus was founded in 1981 (originally known as The Arun Sounds) and quickly established a reputation for quality singing. We sing unaccompanied in four voice parts - Bass, Baritone, Lead (the melody) and Tenor. We entertain in the local community as well as taking part in regional festivals and national competitions. How do I get started? After your first two visits (free of charge) we suggest that you attend rehearsals at £2 per week (less than half the usual subscription) to become more familiar with the activities of the chorus. Your section leader will issue you music and learning tracks for one or two of the songs in the repertoire.
What is the audition? You will be given sheet music and mp3 tracks to learn your part of a barbershop standard: Heart of my heart. This is a short, simple song, which gives you the opportunity to explore different parts, better understand your range and a chance to hear how the chords fit together.
When you are ready, (usually, within about 6 weeks) we will ask you to sing this song with 4 other people - one of whom will be singing your part with you. This allows you and our MD to hear if you can hold your part. You will have the opportunity to practice in a small group and are welcome to have multiple attempts if needed. How much does it cost? We currently pay subscriptions of £25 per month, paid monthly by BACS. Subscriptions cover hall rental, LABBS/BABS subscriptions, music, any additional coaching we might have and most costumes. What is LABBS? The Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers is a national organisation which supports ladies a cappella choruses in the UK, providing education, contests and the annual Convention. Arun A Cappella is a member of LABBS and takes part in some of these events through the year. We also send representatives to the Council meeting in London twice a year. What is BABS? The British Association of Barbershop Singers is the national organisation which supports male a cappella choruses in the UK, providing education, contests and the annual Convention. Any men who join Arun A Cappella, will need to register with BABS instead of LABBS. Contacts Naomi Cole - Musical Director
